The Windmill Cinema Club
IT TOOK A YEAR... Following a year-long campaign backed by 1500 supporters, the Windmill cinema re-opened early in 2014, offering a wide-ranging programme and exciting new facilities.
Windmill Cinema Ltd., has been set up as part of Cinemobile, a small independent company with extensive experience in Sussex, and has made a significant investment in the cinema by installing digital equipment to screen films ranging from new releases to older classics and favourites. In addition, they have also installed a satellite dish to stream live national and international events, such as plays, operas, ballets, concerts and sports.
Viability of the scheme does depend on Volunteer Input in the way of helpers and ushers, but there has been a tremendous response for the cinema supporters group. More information about programmes and tickets can be found on the Windmill Cinema Facebook Page
Attention is now beginning to focus on what steps may be required to keep and improve on the current arrangements. With that in mind, a temporary steering group has been formed, chaired by Graham Leigh-Jones with David Johnson as vice-chairman
Another issue that cropped up was possible removal of medium-stay rates for the Car Park at Harbour Park. Following contact and representations from the Cinema Supporters Group, the Leisure, Tourism & Infrastructure Working Group meeting of ADC Wed 29 Jan 2014 resolved Car parking charges in Windmill Car park should be brought back to include: Up to Three hours £4
The final result is that parking outside the Windmill will cost £3 for two to three hours, with the first hour free of charge. This applies 8 am to 6pm, seven days a week, Sundays and bank holidays included, but you will be delighted to hear that parking remains free after 6pm

A small number of enthusiasts hung around the the Windmill through November and December 2012 and lobbied the Cinema Goers to see if there would be support for a Cinema Club - intended to be a group that will do what it can to keep Cinema in Littlehampton, and have some fun in the process. And there certainly was support, the number of people expressing an interest has now passed the Thousand mark!
The Consultancy that prepared the Draft Leisure Strategy which brought about formation of the Emergency Community Support Groups has now (mid-January) submitted its Review of the Public Consultation, and made modified proposals in the light of the Public response. Briefly, the Swimming and Sports Centre seems to be safe for the next 8 years; the Windmill's future is much less certain. The theatre groups are likely to be able to use the Windmill for the remaining 3 years of Inspire's lease, but no films are scheduled after 14th February 2013, and there is no plan in place to buy a digital projector.
